BSc (Hons) Applied Computing (Top-Up)

Overview:

This course covers the whole field of professional computing. It has a strong practical element and many areas where you can specialise and gain expertise.

We developed this degree with input from employers, students and professional bodies. This means that what you learn is relevant to what you’ll do when you graduate, and your skills will meet the standards that employers expect.

Computers are fundamental to many industries, so you can apply your skills in many fields. Companies of all sizes need project managers, software engineers, software developers, information managers, website developers, technical support, and more. This course offers a thorough grounding in the necessary skills to open up a flexible career in computing. You will be able to work in a broad variety of businesses sectors and in several different roles.

In general, international applicants will need to have achieved an overall IELTS grade of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

The modules you will study include:

  • Individual Project – Informatics
  • Advanced Databases and Modelling
  • The Computing Professional in Practice

Optional modules include:

  • Advanced Internet and Mobile Computing
  • GIS and the Spatial Web
  • Advanced Integrated Computing Devices

Teaching

You will have around 16 hours of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions every week. You also need to spend four hours per week, per module on your coursework, general reading and other preparation. 

Assessment

Types of assessment include examinations, coursework and exercises based on real-life problems.

Additional Costs

As a student of USW, you’ll have access to lots of free resources to support your study and learning, such as textbooks, publications, online journals, laptops, and plenty of remote-access resources. Whilst in most cases these resources are more than sufficient in supporting you with completing your course, additional costs, both obligatory and optional, may be required or requested for the likes of travel, memberships, experience days, stationery, printing, or equipment.

This course will prepare you for a dynamic career in business or IT. You will know both the technical and commercial aspects of modern business, so a host of professional opportunities will be available to you on graduation. You will be very well placed to take on roles in IT, business management or consultancy, in the public or private sectors.

Our employer database has over 2,000 registered employers targeting USW students, you can receive weekly email alerts for jobs.

Our Careers service has dedicated teams: A central work experience team to help you find relevant placements; an employability development team which includes an employability programme called Grad Edge; and an Enterprise team focused on new business ideas and entrepreneurship.
